Hi, my name is Julie.
I am a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor. I offer a warm and friendly approach, working face-to-face with adults in North Leeds, as well as online & by telephone with clients further afield. To ensure safe and ethical practice, I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), adhering to the BACP Ethical Framework. I am fully insured, and I hold a current Enhanced DBS Certificate.
Prior to being a counsellor, I was a teacher. My role involved caring for my pupils and their families, being there for my colleagues, as well as mentoring student teachers. It became clear to me how passionate I was about helping people and supporting them through difficult times in their lives. The value of offering a safe, trusting space for someone to talk, and providing them with the personalised care and support they needed when they were struggling, was clear. I found this very rewarding, which determined my decision to embark on a career in therapeutic counselling.
I hold a degree in Psychology and a Diploma in Integrative Counselling. As part of my Continued Professional Development, I have completed courses including Safeguarding, Trauma Informed Training, Self-Harm & Online Safety, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
Working with clients at York St John Communities Centre and undertaking online counselling sessions for Lindum Outreach has enabled me to support people from many different backgrounds and walks of life. My aim is to enable all my clients to feel safe and comfortable, to feel valued and heard, and to experience a positive, therapeutic relationship in which there is no judgement at all.
I thoroughly enjoy working with adults of all ages, and also have a special interest in supporting young adults and college/university students. Coming to counselling to talk about your pressures, worries and anxieties can help you to feel validated, understood and less isolated.
I have helped clients with different presenting issues and difficulties including anger, abuse, bullying, disassociation, relationship difficulties and trauma. Below are several other areas in which I have gained particular experience:
Anxiety can impact our lives in so many ways. Exploring triggers and practising coping strategies can help to alleviate symptoms of anxiety.
Depression can be all-consuming. Talking about emotions and developing in self-awareness can support you to understand what makes you feel better.
Low self -esteem affects your confidence and the way you see yourself. Understanding its origins and practising new approaches can be helpful to rediscover your self-belief and to enable you to take new opportunities.
Attachment difficulties are often derived from relationships in your past. Counselling can help you to delve deeper into these to support your self-understanding and to improve current relationships.
Bereavement and loss can be some of the most challenging times in our lives. Talking about and accepting the wide range of emotions involved, enables you to work through your grief with support.
Work-related stress/pressure can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Counselling can help you to offload and to reflect on your work/life balance, becoming an agent for change or finding ways to manage your stress more effectively.
OCD tendencies can become a way of life, but developing self-understanding can support you to implement tools to manage your anxieties and unwanted behaviours.
Procrastination can be debilitating. Exploring your anxieties can help you to understand how to help yourself to feel less stuck and to begin to steadily move forward.
Counselling gives you the opportunity to speak to a trained professional about any struggles, issues or concerns you have. I am an Integrative Counsellor with a foundation in person-centred therapy. My training and experience mean that I can use different types of therapy to suit you. Everyone is unique, and the benefits of working in an integrative way is that sessions are very personalised, with your counselling being tailored very specifically to your requirements. I have a particular interest in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which I have found to be extremely effective for some clients.

Person-Centred Therapy (PCT) is a humanistic type of counselling which focusses on you at the heart of your counselling sessions. You have the freedom to bring whatever is important to you to each session; I am there to listen, to understand and to support you. As you explore your life and your difficulties, you will hopefully grow in self-understanding and self-acceptance. This approach has many benefits: it can empower you to revisit your values, to recognise your worth, to determine your choices and to make changes which are right for you.

If you have specific challenges or difficulties which you would like to focus on, then I can introduce a range of different counselling approaches. CBT, for example, focusses on the relationship between your thoughts, your feelings, and your actions. It can help you to break down your problems to change patterns of unhelpful thinking, or to challenge and overcome automatic thoughts. Together, we will explore your thinking to recognise any biases, we will introduce practical strategies which are suitable for you, and we will monitor your progress. The aim of CBT is to teach you skills which you can then apply to your day-to-day life.
I am currently offering face-to-face, online and telephone sessions. The sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place on a weekly basis. We can discuss your requirements during our initial conversation.
For some people, meeting in person is an important aspect of their counselling. They feel more comfortable in a face-to-face session and more connected to their counsellor. If you choose this option, your sessions will take place in my dedicated counselling room.
Some clients prefer to access counselling online and from the comfort of their own home. This may be due to different reasons including accessibility issues, childcare or work commitments. I use Teams or WhatsApp to meet online.
Some people choose telephone counselling. They may prefer not to be seen during sessions, may not have internet access, or may find talking on the telephone more suitable for them. If this is what you choose, I will call you from my mobile number.
There is no set number of sessions, we can discuss this as we go along. We will review your progress regularly to determine how you feel about your counselling and what you would like to do moving forward. You can choose to end your sessions at any time, I request a week’s notice if possible.
I have created a warm, welcoming space in which clients feel comfortable to talk and to open-up. The room is spacious, relaxed, modern and private. Tea/coffee and water are available.
“Julie was incredibly supportive and always adapted the sessions to meet my needs."
“Julie has really helped me find some self-confidence and self-worth that I had been squashing for a long time - the right person at the perfect time in my life to give me help."
“I felt that I could bring anything to the sessions and always felt better afterwards."
“The sessions have made a big impact on my life. Julie has been amazing and made me feel comfortable from day one."
“Counselling has made me more proactive - I feel braver to push myself forward. The more I push myself, I notice that I'm not feeling quite as anxious."
“Talking about the past was difficult, but it helped me to understand the knock-on effects of past experiences."
I offer a free initial telephone session which can last between 10- 20 minutes. This gives us the opportunity to talk about what you are looking for and how I can help you. You can also ask me any questions.
Sessions are £50 for 50 minutes. I offer discounts for students.
Payment is by bank transfer or cash. The first session should be secured with a payment at the time of booking. Subsequent sessions must be paid at least 24 hours before the session is due to start.
